Nimotuzumab is an anti-EGFR monoclonal antibody that has been approved for the treatment of head and neck tumors in more than 20 countries, including India. During the oral presentation session at this year’s American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting, Professor Kumar Prabhash from Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai, India, shared the results of a phase III, randomized, controlled clinical trial evaluating nimotuzumab in combination with concurrent chemoradiotherapy for locally advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (LASHNC). The study findings demonstrated that, compared to cisplatin plus radiation therapy alone, the nimotuzumab-plus-cisplatin-and-radiation regimen significantly improved progression-free survival (PFS), local recurrence-free interval (LRC), and disease-free survival (DFS). This innovative combination therapy now offers a promising new treatment option for patients with locally advanced head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.
